4 Things You Should Know About The “Nigeria We Hail Thee” Anthem (Photos)

Before the traditional “Arise O Compatriots” anthem, we had another anthem as a nation.

Nigeria, we hail thee,

Our own dear native land,

Though tribe and tongue may differ,

In brotherhood we stand,

Nigerians all are proud to serve

Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol

That truth and justice reign,

In peace or battle honour’d,

And this we count as gain,

To hand on to our children

A banner without stain.

O God of all creation,

Grant this our one request,

Help us to build a nation

Where no man is oppressed,

And so with peace and plenty

Nigeria may be blessed.

Well here are four things you should know about this old anthem:

1. It was used the original anthem played at independence

2. It was used for 18 years and at 1978, the new anthem was adopted

3. It was written by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate who lived in Nigeria then and the music was composed by Frances Berda

4. The Daily Service and Egbe Omo Oduduwa started a rebellious campaign when the anthem was released.
